Flying Lotus is a very talented cat. If you're looking for beats to zone out to, then this should be right up your alley. His new album is Cosmogramma and it features Radiohead's Thom Yorke in one song, And the World Laughs with You.

In the Streets
The first documentary by British street artist Banksy was released last month in the U.S. Although I haven’t seen Exit Through the Gift Shop, I read a review claiming it was bit convoluted. What else would you expect from this phantom tagger? The movie is an indirect portrait of the anarchist, Banksy and his American counterpart, Shepherd Fairey, whose work has had huge political impact (ie: the Obama Hope image that helped win the election). What’s most interesting is not so much the actual imagery but these artist's ability to make politically charged statements with simple, stenciled imagery. Propaganda in Warhol-esque proportions.
I took this photo of a Banksy rat in Liverpool in 2008.
El Nino de las PInturas is less well-known street artist working in el Realejo neighborhood in Granada, Spain. I stumbled upon his murals, which line an entire street, while wandering around the city in 2009. These are some photos I took of his beautiful work. Like Banksy and Fairy, he is changing public attitudes toward street art, making it more widely accepted and appreciated.

back to the future
With the resurgence of all things 1980's from wayfarers to leotards, I decided to raid my mom's closet in search of treasures she has kept and not looked at, let alone worn in 15 years. Luckily for me, she takes impeccable care of her things. I surfaced with a silk kimono from Japan, 3 button down shirts, and this little gem, a long sleeved knit with jagged mesh top from 1981. SCORE.
Slightly reminiscent of a figure skater's top? meybe. The trick is to mix and match these vintage items with more contemporary ones (ie: low cut jeans) so as to not completely regurgitate the look of 25 years ago, but rather combine to create whole new looks. The point is to pay tribute to the past while still exemplifying the here and now.
...and now for a tribute to Phillipe Halsman,

Head On by Cai Guo-qiang
The work of Cai Guo-quing is a stunning political commentary that mixes traditional Chinese mythologies with volatile materials like gun powder and fireworks. These are meant to illustrate spontaneity in the suppressed Chinese artistic tradition. I was lucky enough to see his solo exhibition at the Guggenheim in 2008. One of the highlights was the installation, Inopportune: State One, which consisted of 9 compact cars suspended through the interior of the Guggenheim appearing like separate frames of an explosion. My personal favorite was Head On, an installation consisting of 99 life-sized wolves fabricated from painted sheepskins and stuffed with metal wires and hay. The wolves appear to stream endlessly into a glass wall.

skeletal love song
The xx have kept me mesmerized with their 2009 debut album. Hushed vocals give a shroud of secrecy making songs like Crystalised both delicate and alluring.

let it glow
Back in April, I shot some long exposure images at a day glow that eventually led to inspiration for a painting. It was a fun, energetic night and I wanted to capture that energy with blocked out areas of glow-in-the-dark paint, which is by the way, very thin and difficult to build volume with. Here are the original images:

Night at the Fountainbleau
In the lobby of the Foutainbleu hotel in Miami Beach, a peculiarly dressed women sits alone. I drew inspiration from the isolated figures of Edward Hopper, as well as the ethereal interiors of Rosson Crow.
